Cardinal Pell, from soccer prospect to priest

He was born 71 years ago in southwestern Australia. Cardinal Pell will be the only cardinal from Oceania voting in the conclave. He is also one of 50 that took part in the 2005 election of Benedict XVI. Shortly before that vote he described how he felt.

"I don't think I'm so much nervous, but I'm on my toes. I recognize this as a enormously important historic moment for the church and pleased God will get the decision right."

Pell is recognized as a passionate and very eloquent person. The Oxford-educated theologian devoted much of his time to education. His essays and articles have also been published in many outlets like the Oxford Press. He also has a weekly column at the Sunday Telegraph, Sydney's leading newspaper.

Before he was ordained a priest, Pell signed on to play soccer for an Australian soccer team, a passion that continues to this day.
